Katrin Gaska is a lettering artist who specialises in reverse glass gilding, traditional signwriting and calligraphy. Her intricate glass pieces, rooted in the age-old technique of verre églomisé, involve applying real gold leaf to the back of glass, using a variety of methods including water gilding, oil gilding, acid etching and embellishing with enamel paints, glitter, and abalone shell. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted using heritage craft skills with a bold, contemporary edge.
Katrin’s work draws on the rich visual language of Victoriana signage, circus and funfair lettering and folk art. She combines these references and adds a playful contemporary twist.
Inspiration comes from all around her—visiting exhibitions, watching films, listening to music walking in the woods or catching up with friends.
Katrin’s work has been recently featured in the latest issue of BLAG: Better Letters Magazine and she was interviewed by Bucks Art Weeks for an upcoming feature. She appeared on Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas 2024 (Channel 4, Episode 2: The Gift), where she demonstrated reverse glass gilding and created a ‘JOY’ artwork in genuine gold leaf.
Her work has recently been exhibited at Longwick Art Show, Bucks Art Weeks (Manor Farm Collective), and The Art Exhibitionists at Oxmoor Farm, and is available through The Naughty Goat Gift Shop and Freya Jones Art Gallery or by commission through her website.
Katrin’s work will be displayed at Umberto’s – 9 Greyhound Walk, Thame OX9 3DY from 11-19 October.
